So…What is Letterpress?

So, you know that we are totally in love with the technique, but most of you are probably wondering…what on earth does letterpress actually mean?

Well, this vintage technique involves applying pressure into paper using a raised plate (made from magnesium or polymer). The pressure from the plate leaves behind a beautiful, tactile impression in the paper…the plate can be left blank, or more commonly, can be inked to any colour.

We use our gorgeous vintage letterpress, (Hendrick the Heidleberg) to create all of our invitations…he dates back to 1956. However the technique of letterpressing dates back much further…to the 15th Century, when it was the original means of printing newspapers.

We are ever-so slightly obsessed with Hendrick, and would love to show you more…please take a look to get more of an idea of how we create your invitations. (I apologise for the ridiculous number of photos…it’s a little bit like a new parent who will not stop showing you their baby pictures…each one only ever so slightly different to the last 400 you have been shown! Sorry!) You can also find out about his somewhat troublesome arrival in our blogpost, here.
